United States, Minnesota, Stearns, Spirit Prairie Wildlife Management Area. Nearly level outwash plain one mile north of Paynesville, just west of the city's sewage treatment ponds.

Habitat:
Uncommon and quite local in a degraded wet-mesic to mesic prairie opening on a slight elevation rise in a large wet meadow - willow swamp complex. Full sun. Deep, moist to fairly wet black loam. Often in moss carpets. Very loose colonies; a few dozen plants here. Fertile culms infrequent.

Associates include Andropogon gerardii, Poa pratensis, Carex tetanica, C. buxbaumii, Hypoxis hirsuta, Lathyrus palustris, Sisyrinchium campestre, Packera aurea, Solidago canadensis, Thalictrum dasycarpum, Zizia aurea, Commandra umbellata, Fragaria virginiana.
