Locality: United States, Minnesota, Stearns, Spirit Prairie Wildlife Management Area. Nearly level outwash plain one mile north of Paynesville, just west of the city's sewage treatment ponds.

Habitat: Uncommon and quite local in a degraded wet-mesic to mesic prairie opening on a slight elevation rise in a large wet meadow - willow swamp complex. Full sun. Deep, moist to fairly wet black loam. Often in moss carpets. Very loose colonies; a few dozen plants here. Fertile culms infrequent.
Associated Species: Associates include Andropogon gerardii, Poa pratensis, Carex tetanica, C. buxbaumii, Hypoxis hirsuta, Lathyrus palustris, Sisyrinchium campestre, Packera aurea, Solidago canadensis, Thalictrum dasycarpum, Zizia aurea, Commandra umbellata, Fragaria virginiana.
