Habitat:
Locally abundant in a small (one-acre) marsh. Co-dominant with Sagittaria latifolia. Robust clumps, aggregated into fairly dense patches, in an emergent zone surrounding a small (1/4-acre), shallow pond. Rooting in a mucky-organic mat that floats ~ a foot above the muck substrate. Clumps often basally submerged in shallow water. Full sun.

Additional associates include Eleocharis obtusa, Scirpus cyperinus, Glyceria grandis, Leersia oryzoides, Lycopus uniflorus, Galium trifidum, Alisma triviale, Sparganium emersum, Bidens cernua, Lemna minor, Spirodela polyrhiza.
