Habitat:
Locally abundant in a small (one-acre) marsh. Co-dominant with Carex comosa. In an emergent zone surrounding a small (1/4-acre), shallow pond. Rooting in a mucky-organic mat that floats a foot or so above the muck substrate. Often basally submerged in shallow water. Full sun.

Additional associates include Eleocharis obtusa, Scirpus cyperinus, Glyceria grandis, Leersia oryzoides, Alisma triviale, Bidens cernua, Lycopus uniflorus, Sparganium emersum, Galium trifidum, Spirodela polyrhiza, Lemna minor.
