Occasional to common in a degraded calcareous seepage fen complex, perched on the moderately steep, (south- to) west-facing slopes of a 40-foot hill. Full sun in open fen settings near groundwater emergence zones, and in fairly shady settings beneath dense stands of Typha angustifolia that have invaded most of the fen. Wet marly muck and shallow, highly-decomposed peat.
Additional associates include Muhlenbergia glomerata, M. richardsonis, Carex aquatilis, C. prairea, Rhynchospora capillacea, Parnassia glauca, Triglochin palustris, T. maritima, Pedicularis lanceolata, Aster borealis, Betula pumila, Salix candida.
