Locality: United States, Minnesota, Mille Lacs, Rum River State Forest. Rolling drumlin plain east of the West Fork Groundhouse River, ten miles northwest of Ogilvie.

Habitat: Occasional to frequent locally in rich mesic hardwood forest on the broad, level top of a drumlin. Maturing, even-aged stand dominated by Acer saccharum, Quercus rubra, Tilia americana, and Quercus macrocarpa. Understory includes Ostrya virginiana, Carpinus caroliniana, and Fraxinus nigra. Moist, dark, rich sandy-loam. Forming rather dense patches here.
Associated Species: Additional associates include Carex pensylvanica, C. radiata, C. leptonervia, C. intumescens, Trillium grandiflorum, Uvularia sessilifolia, Mitella diphylla, Aster macrophyllus, Hepatica americana, Athyrium angustum, Rubus pubescens.
