Habitat:
Common in sedge fen on the margin of a black spruce bog. Full sun to partial shade of stunted Larix laricina and Picea mariana. Continuous Sphagnum carpets. Wet buoyant peat; sometimes in shallow water. Forming dense patches.

Associates include Eriophorum gracile, E. chamissonis, Carex chordorrhiza, C. canescens, C. utriculata, C. lacustris, Utricularia intermedia, U. minor, Drosera rotundifolia, Thelypteris palustris, Lysimachia thyrsiflora, Chamaedaphne calyculata, Spiraea tomentosa, Salix pyrifolia, S. lucida.
