Habitat:
Infrequent to locally common in sedge fen on the margin of a black spruce bog. Full sun to partial shade of stunted Larix laricina and Picea mariana. Continuous Sphagnum carpets. Wet buoyant peat; sometimes in shallow water. Loose patches; thousands of fertile culms.

Associates include Eriophorum chamissonis, Carex lasiocarpa, C. chordorrhiza, C. canescens, C. lacustris, C. utriculata, Drosera rotundifolia, Thelypteris palustris, Lysimachia thyrsiflora, Utricularia intermedia, U. minor, Chamaedaphne calyculata, Spiraea tomentosa, Salix pyrifolia, S. lucida.
