United States, Minnesota, St. Louis, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Rolling to fairly rugged bedrock terrain along the Canadian border 20 miles north of Ely, on the shores of Crooked Lake, Saturday and Sunday Bays, and towards Friday Bay.
Infrequent to locally common. In coarse sand and gravel (often with silty cap) in level to sloping settings (often over granitic bedrock) at the upper end of the wave-wash zone, ~2-3 feet above the water line (lake is down ~8-12 inches from the early season high mark). Small, dense clumps; growing singly or in groups (dozens to hundreds). Full sun to partial shade.
