United States, Minnesota, St. Louis, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Rolling to fairly rugged bedrock terrain along the Canadian border 22 miles north of Ely, in the northern portion of Sunday Bay, Crooked Lake.

Habitat:
Locally common on a small island. Loose to dense patches on a rather extensive, gently sloping, granitic shelf perched ~4-8 feet above the lake. Dense, robust clumps rooting in shallow detrital soil over dry bedrock. Often amongst mats of lichens and mosses (Cladina spp., Polytrichum sp., Hedwigia ciliata, etc.). Full sun.
