Local on the very gradually sloping margin of a small, shallow lake. Moist muck over sand, mostly in shallow water. Full sun. Forming fairly large and rather dense patches. Fertile culms are commonly 6-7 feet tall.
Associates include Carex utriculata, C. atherodes, Typha xglauca, Phalaris arundinacea, Persicaria amphibia, Sagittaria latifolia, Utricularia vulgaris.
