Habitat:
Locally common near a small shoreline meadow. Forming fairly dense patches in water ~3-4 feet deep. Entirely submerged in clear water. Rather soft to moderately firm mucky organic substrate. Full sun.

Associates include Sparganium fluctuans, Brasenia schreberi, Nuphar variegata, Nymphaea tuberosa, Schoenoplectus subterminalis.
