United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. On the shores of Basswood Lake in fairly rugged bedrock terrain 11 miles north-northeast of Ely, in the western portion of Jackfish Bay.
Low, 1/2-acre island. Small colonies (6-10 clumps) 1-3 feet above lake level. Shallow soil (organic silt to coarse sand and rock fragments) over gently sloping, rounded to shallowly depressional, granitic rock. Full sun to partial shade (Pinus banksiana, P. strobus, Thuja occidentalis). Rather dense and mostly robust clumps, with up to 50 fertile culms. [This spot is very near, and similar to, the small islet where a specimen (MDL6305) identified by Reznicek and Rothrock as "Carex tincta" was collected in 2013.]
Associates include Spiraea alba, Myrica gale, Prunus susquehanae, Vaccinium angustifolium, V. macrocarpon, Dichanthelium acuminatum, Agrostis scabra, Euthamia graminifolia, Oenothera perennis.
