Locality:
United States, Minnesota, St. Louis, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Sundial Lake Primitive Management Area. Along the Stewart River southeast of Stewart Lake, in rolling to moderately rugged bedrock terrain 19 miles north-northwest of Ely, on the south side of Contest Lake.

Habitat:
Local near a small stream that cascades down from a swamp that is perched above the lake. Fairly dense patch of several hundred fronds in a moist ecotonal setting, just above the elevation of the adjacent boggy lake shore. Partial sun to fully shade by Picea mariana, Abies balsamea, Alnus incana, and Pinus strobus. Organic substrate.
Associated Species:
Associates include Carex stricta, C. intumescens, Athyrium angustum, Cornus canadensis, Rubus pubescens, Maianthemum canadense.
