Infrequent, forming small patches along a small, intermittent stream. Shaded beneath patchy canopy of Fraxinus nigra and Populus tremuloides, and a fairly dense, tall understory of Acer spicatum and scattered Alnus incana. Rather shallow loamy soil over granitic bedrock; in gently sloping moist settings within a few feet of the stream.
Additional associates include Athyrium angustum, Equisetum sylvaticum, Maianthemum canadense, Viola incognita, Carex gracillima, C. leptonervia, C. brunnescens, Ribes triste.
