Habitat:
Abundant, co-dominant with Betula pumila in a patterned rich shrub fen (that is somewhat degraded by a large ditch). Full sun to partially shaded by stunted Larix laricina. Buoyant, saturated peat. Patchy Sphagnum carpets. Forming dense patches of low, branching shrubs, mostly 24-30 inches tall.

Additional associates include Carex interior, C. lasiocarpa, C. echinata, C. chordorrhiza, C. livida, C. canescens, Eriophorum gracile, Potentilla palustris, Triadenum fraseri, Viola macloskeyi, Drosera rotundifolia, Equisetum fluviatile, Thelypteris palustris.
