Habitat:
Occasional in an ecotonal strip of hardwood swamp (between sedge fen and mesic forest). Interrupted canopy dominated by Ulmus americana and Fraxinus nigra, with occasional Larix laricina, Tilia americana, and Betula papyrifera. Silty muck. Loose clumps, on low hummocks.

Associates include Carex deweyana, C. stipata, C. gracillima, C. pedunculata, Festuca subverticillata, Glyceria striata, Galium asprellum, Circaea alpina, Scutellaria lateriflora, Platanthera aquilonis, Bidens spp., Equisetum arvense, E. pratense, E. sylvaticum, Athyrium angustum.
