Habitat:
Very locally common on the margin of a small (~1/8-acre) sedge meadow. Shaded by Populus tremuloides, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Quercus macrocarpa, and Q. rubra in the canopy of the surrounding mesic hardwood forest. In moist to wet mucky-organic loam, at and just above the elevation of the meadow. Loose patches.

Associates include Scutellaria lateriflora, S. galericulata, Lycopus uniflorus, Arisaema triphyllum, Bidens frondosa, B. comosa, Athyrium angustum, Carex brunnescens, C. lupulina, Phalaris arundinacea.
