United States, Minnesota, Otter Tail, On a large island in the extensive North and South Maple Lakes wetland complex, on level to gently rolling sandy outwash four miles northeast of Parkers Prairie.

Habitat:
Locally abundant in the center of a small (~1/8-acre) vernal wetland, and frequent on the margin of its shallow basin. Shaded by Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Populus tremuloides, Quercus rubra, and Q. macrocarpa in the canopy of the surrounding hardwood forest. Moist to wet mucky-organic soil. Ray flowers absent. Achenes retrorsely barbed to the base, 2-3 awned at the summit.

Associates include Bidens frondosa, B. cernua, Scutellaria lateriflora, Pilea fontana, Lemna minor, Alisma triviale, Lycopus uniflorus, Carex lacustris, C. brunnescens, C. intumescens.
