Habitat:
Locally abundant in the center of a small (~1/8-acre) vernal wetland, and frequent on the margin of its shallow basin. Shaded by Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Populus tremuloides, Quercus rubra, and Q. macrocarpa in the canopy of the surrounding hardwood forest. Moist to wet mucky-organic soil. Ray flowers absent. Achenes retrorsely barbed to the base, 2-3 awned at the summit.
