Locality: United States, Minnesota, St. Louis, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Sundial Lake Primitive Management Area. Atop a gently-rolling bedrock ridge on the east side of White Feather Lake, 17 miles north-northwest of Ely.

Habitat: In a quite extensive rock outcrop complex. Frequent in shallow, moist depressions in the granitic rock (migmatite). Often in mats of Cladina spp., Hedwigia ciliata, and Polytrichum sp., that cover the bare rock. Mostly in full sun (some partially shaded by young Pinus banksiana, regenerating from a major 1996 wildfire). Robust clumps (up to 50 culms).
Associated Species: Additional associates include Agrostis scabra, Danthonia spicata, Dichanthelium acuminatum, Carex abdita, Fallopia cilinodis, Corydalis sempervirens, Aralia hispida, Vaccinium angustifolium.
