Locality:
United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Moderately rugged bedrock terrain east of Snowbank Lake, 25 miles east-northeast of Ely. At the western end of Jordan Lake, near the portage to Cattyman Lake.

Habitat:
Local, small dense clumps, these growing singly or in small patches, on a moderately steep, 40-foot, east-facing slope. Patchy canopy of Pinus strobus, and a patchy understory of Pinus strobus, P. banksiana, Prunus pensylvanica, Corylus cornuta, and Amelanchier sp. Partial sun. In shallow silty soil near bedrock outcrops (Knife Lake metasediments).

Additional associates include Oryzopsis pungens, O. asperifolia, Danthonia spicata, Poa pratensis, P. compressa, Dichanthelium acuminatum, Juniperus communis.
