Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Gichi Gami State Trail. Along the Lake Superior shore at Silver Cliff, in rugged bedrock terrain four miles northeast of Two Harbors, above the Gichi Gami State Trail.

Habitat: Rare and very local on the extremely steep mid-slope of a steep, 180-foot, south-facing ridge, in a natural setting west of the major portion of this slope that was long ago altered by the construction of old State Highway 61. Partial shade of Betula papyrifera and Abies balsamea in a woodland with a patchy canopy and an often dense shrub layer. Several plants here in talus below cliff-like diabase outcrops; these with several stems each, to ~6 feet tall.
Associated Species: Additional associates include Cornus rugosa, Acer spicatum, Rosa acicularis, Symphoricarpos albus, Aster macrophyllus.
