Habitat: Local on the mid- to upper portion of a steep, south-facing bluff that rises 160 feet here (rising much higher westward). Occasional in a degraded savanna / old pasture setting that had restoration work (invasive brush removal) done ~5 years ago. Full sun to partial shade (Tilia americana, Quercus macrocarpa, Carya ovata). Silty-loam. Dense vegetative sod. Singles and loose patches totaling 100-150 plants in gently to steeply sloping spots. Some plants with 3-4 stems. Larger stems are 4-6 feet tall.
Associated Species: Associates include Rubus occidentalis, Monarda fistulosa, Verbena urticifolia, Desmodium glutinosum, Solidago canadensis, Andropogon gerardii, Bromus inermis.
