Habitat:
Quite local on the narrow bottomland between steep 220-foot bluffs. Small loose colony in moist organic silt, on the margins of a groundwater seepage meadow. Partial shade of Tilia americana, Fraxinus nigra, and Quercus macrocarpa. Loose to rather dense clumps, with dozens of fertile culms.

Associates include Carex laevivaginata, C. hirtifolia, Caltha palustris, Aster prenanthoides, Campanula americana, Solidago gigantea, Packera aurea, Stellaria longifolia, Barbarea vulgaris, Equisetum hyemale.
