Locality: United States, Minnesota, Fillmore, Along the South Fork Root River 1.5 miles southwest of Choice, 9.5 miles southeast of Lanesboro.

Habitat: Local on the steep cut-bank of a small ravine, on the lower slope of a very steep, 260-foot, west-facing bluff. Degraded mesic hardwood forest. Partial shade beneath short, patchy canopy of Quercus macrocarpa, Betula papyrifera, Juniperus virginiana, Ostrya virginiana, Tilia americana, and Ulmus americana. A couple vining plants here, climbing ~3 feet high into Zanthoxylum americanum and Prunus virginiana. Silty soil with large dolomitic rocks. Maroon floral buds, petals reddish-orange. Subtly sweet but very faint fragrance (mid-afternoon).
Associated Species: Associates include Toxicodendron rydbergii, Asarum canadense, Zanthoxylum americanum, Prunus virginiana.
