Habitat:
Quite local at the base of a very steep, 300-foot, northeast-facing bluff. Several trees occur along the rim of 5- to 20-foot high mesic sandstone cliffs in a mesic hardwood forest. Specimen from lower branches of the largest tree, a ~20-foot tall, 14-inch D.B.H. individual with a contorted lower trunk. Also occurring locally at the base of steep north-facing bluffs upstream where associates include Equisetum scirpoides.
Associated Species:
Associates include Acer saccharum, Quercus rubra, Ulmus americana, Rubus pubescens, Polypodium virginianum, Cystopteris tenuis, Aquilegia canadensis, Aralia nudicaulis.
