United States, Minnesota, Winona, Whitewater Wildlife Management Area. Rugged forested terrain two miles north of Utica, along the South Fork Whitewater River, downstream from Holt Spring.

Habitat:
Local at the base of a steep, 200-foot, north-facing bluff. Forming loose to rather dense patches of small, tight clumps in rich mesic hardwood forest. Canopy dominated by Acer saccharum, Quercus rubra, Tilia americana, and Fraxinus nigra. Understory of Carya cordiformis, Quercus macrocarpa, Betula allegheniensis, and Ostrya virginiana. Deep clayey-silt, with mossy dolomite rocks. Thousands of clumps.

Additional associates include Cystopteris bulbifera, Adiantum pedatum, Allium cernuum, A. tricoccum, Asarum canadense, Anemone quinquefolia.
