Locality: United States, Minnesota, Pine, Along the gorge of the Kettle River in rugged terrain 1.5 miles north-northeast of Sandstone, on the west side of the river, along the lower reaches of Hell's Gate rapids.

Habitat: On the lower portion of 120-foot, east-facing bluffs. Frequent very locally on the lower portion of 30- to 50-foot high sandstone cliffs. Singles and small groups of plants, in wet zones maintained by groundwater seepage. Rooting on narrow ledges and in moss and liverwort carpets. Full sun in the morning, shaded during the afternoon and evening. Light (dull) purple petals.
Associated Species: Associates include Primula mistassinica, Cystopteris fragilis, Thelypteris phegopteris, Dasiphora fruticosa, Carex media.
