Locality: United States, Minnesota, Pine, Banning State Park. Along the gorge of the Kettle River in rugged terrain 1.5 miles north-northeast of Sandstone, on the west side of the river, along the lower reaches of Hell's Gate rapids.

Habitat: On the lower portion of 120-foot, east-facing bluffs. Frequent very locally on lower to mid-portions of 30- to 50-foot high sandstone cliffs. Dozens of plants, in zones maintained by groundwater seepage. Rooting along wet, mossy ledges and in crevices. Full sun before noon, shaded during afternoon and evening. Multi-stemmed shrubs, to ~30 inches tall; stems often hanging downward with their tips curled upward.
Associated Species: Associates include Primula mistassinica, Carex media, Viola cucullata, Cystopteris fragilis, Thelypteris phegopteris.
