United States, Minnesota, Winona, Whitewater Wildlife Management Area. Rugged forested terrain two miles north of Utica, along the South Fork Whitewater River, downstream from Holt Spring.
Occasional to locally common in rich mesic hardwood forest. Forming small to quite large patches totaling ~thousands of clumps on the steep lower slope of a 200-foot, north-facing bluff. Canopy dominated by Acer saccharum and Tilia americana, with occasional Betula allegheniensis. Understory includes Carpinus caroliniana and Ostrya virginiana. Deep, clayey silt, often with dolomite stones.
