Habitat:
Local on the mid-slope of a steep, 320-foot, southwest-facing bluff. Loose patches, totaling several dozen plants, in a small bluff prairie. Mostly in full sun (some in partial shade of Betula papyrifera and Quercus macrocarpa). Fine silty sand. Low shrubs, mostly <18 inches tall (a few up to 30 inches tall); often several stems (reclining to semi-erect) from a single base.

Associates include Amorpha canescens, Rhus glabra, Bouteloua hirsuta, B. curtipendula, Sporobolus heterolepis, Euphorbia corollata, Liatris cylindracea, Lobelia spicata, Coreopsis palmata, Helianthus occidentalis, Aster sericeus.
