Locality: United States, Minnesota, Pine, Banning State Park. Along the gorge of the Kettle River in rugged terrain 1.5 miles north-northeast of Sandstone, on the west side of the river, along the lower reaches of Hell's Gate rapids.

Habitat: Uncommon to locally rather abundant. Several colonies occur on wet sandstone cliffs, along a ~1/4-mile reach of 120-foot high, east-facing bluffs; dozens to hundreds of plants per colony. Partial sun to fully shaded moist to quite wet settings maintained by groundwater seeping through the rock face. In crevices and shallow organic soil along small ledges. Light purple flowers with sweet but extremely subtle fragrance (afternoon & evening).
Associated Species: Associates include Carex media, Prenanthes alba, Aquilegia canadensis, Cystopteris fragilis.
