Habitat:
Quite local. Small, loose patch on a broad, wet, sandstone ledge on the lower third of 120-foot high east-facing bluffs. Cool, wet, mossy, sheltered microsite maintained by groundwater seepage; shaded beneath a large overhanging cliff face.

Associates include Chrysosplenium iowense, Impatiens capensis, Cardamine pensylvanica, Rubus pubescens, Cystopteris fragilis.
