Habitat: Larger topography is rolling to steep when upland hills dissected by narrow ravines. Forest is severely wormed and deer browse substantial. Poor regen of all tree species at short and tall understory strata. Subcanopy trembling aspen is common along with some Ostrya virginiana and paper birch. Seedlings of trembling aspen most common. Very open understory. No old snags. Some old decaying large pine stumps. Bare soil common due to worms plus seasonal saturation near surface.
Associated Species: Common associates: Maianthemum canadense, Populus tremuloides, Carex pensylvanica, Carex pedunculata, Pteridium aquilinum var. latiusculum, and Rubus pubescens.
