On granite outcrops; in thin soil and in cracks of exposed bedrock. In full sun to partial shade. Associates include Quercus macrocarpa, Q. ellipsoidalis, Ribes cynosbati, Lonicera cf. tatarica, Prunus virginiana, Rhus glabra, Allium stellatum.
