Habitat:
in mesic prairie. Moist to mesic, rich, uncompacted black loam. Full sun. Associates include Andropogon gerardii, Sporobolus heterolepis, Sorghastrum nutans, Bromus kalmii, Pycnanthemum virginianum, Liatris pycnostachya, Zizia aurea, Z. aptera, Solidago riddellii, Petalostemum purpureum, Aster oolentangiensis.
