Habitat: Under a long-term canopy gap in a mesic deciduous forest dominated by Acer saccharum and Tilia americana ... Associated with Quercus rubra, Staphylea trifolia, Prunus virginiana, Crataegus calpodendron, C. punctata.
Description: In early anthesis (spring 2-5 days early). Large single-stemmed shrub 3.5 m tall, and 5 cm dbh. Stamens ca 10, anthers tinged with pink. simple thorns up to 7 cm long; compound thorns absent.
