Habitat: in small stand grading from hardwood swamp to tamarack swamp. Moist to saturated peat. Canopy associates include Larix laricina, Acer rubrum, Fraxinus nigra, Populus tremuloides. Additional associates: Viburnum trilobum, Rhamnus alnifolia, Matteuccia struthiopteris, Osmunda cinnamomea, Rubus pubescens, Mitella nuda, Cornus canadensis, Smilacina trifoliata, Maianthemum canadense, Trientalis borealis.
