Habitat: Rugged terrain...in small, moist depression in old-growth northern hardwood forest atop 180-foot ridge...Canopy dominated by large Acer saccharum & Betula allegheniensis, with Thuja occidentalis locally. Understory of Acer saccharum. Moist, rocky, soil with small boulders. Associates include Dryopteris intermeida, Thelypteris phegopteris, Athyrium angustum, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Clintonia borealis, Lycopodium lucidulum, Carex pedunculata, Acer spicatum, Ribes triste. Also occurs sporadically in moist areas along edge of cedar swamps and in moist ravines
