Habitat: large tamarack swamp complex. One large tree-like shrub growing in area of sparse canopy dominated by Larix laricina. Patchy subcanopy of Ulmus americana and Betula papyrifera. Betula glandulifera occurs in vicinity. Saturated peat. Associates include Alnus incana, Ribes triste, Carex hysteracina [sic], C. leptalea, C. prairea, Cypripedium reginae, Caltha palustris, Calla palustris, Menyanthes trifoliata, Platanthera hyperborea, Saxifraga pensylvanica, Cornus canadensis, Impatiens capensis, Galium asprellum.
