Habitat: Rugged terrain ... on narrow mossy ledges of 30-100 foot, north-facing diabase cliff. On upper portion of 200-foot slope above the [river] ... Cliff shaded by Betula cordifolia & Thuja occidentalis growing above and at the base of the cliff. Occurring in moister situations of the (overall) fairly dry cliff. Associates include Campanula rotundifolia, Woodsia ilvensis, Solidago hispida, Lycopodium selago, Dryopteris fragrans.
