Habitat: in gently rolling sand plain ... in dry prairie-like habitat in broad road right-of-way ... Moderately steep north-facing slope. Compacted sandy soil. Full sun. Associated species include Poa pratensis, Carex siccata, Andropogon gerardii, Lithospermum canescens, Phlox pilosa, Geum triflorum, Antennaria neglecta, Aquilegia canadensis, Apocynum androsaemifolium, Ceanothus herbaceus, and seedlings of Quercus macrocarpa and Pinus banksiana (from adjacent oak woodland).
