Habitat: tamarack swamp under somewhat sparse canopy of Larix laricina. Partial to full shade. Also in full sun in adjacent areas of rich fen / shrub swamp. In wet and shallow water areas, rarely on hummocks. Associated species include Equisetum fluviatile, Caltha palustris, Lysimachia thyrsiflora, Galium labradoricum, Betula glandulifera, Carex pseudocyperus, C. prairea.
