Habitat: lightly-grazed (horses), shrubby wet prairie - wet meadow complex ... Moist, sandy soil with little organic layer. In full sun to shaded by Salix discolor & Populus tremuloides. Associates include Carex haydenii, C. stricta, C. conoidea, C. lanuginosa, Juncus tenuis var. dudleyi, Poa palustris, Luzula multiflora, Ophioglossum pusillum, Platanthera flava, Onoclea sensibilis, Gentiana andrewsii, Cirsium muticum, Saxifraga pennslvanica, Trifolium hybridum, Pedicularis lanceolata, Potentilla palustris, Chrysanthemum leucanthemum.
