Habitat: cliffs, growing out of limestone rock from base and adjacent ground to nearly the top of the cliff along creek. Fairly well shaded by Fraxinus pensylvanica, Tilia americana, Ulmus spp., Quercus macrocarpa. Few associates, but they do include: Mitella diphylla, Parietaria pensylvanica, Cystopteris tenuis, Pellaea glabella, Asplenium rhizophyllum, Cystopteris bulbifera.
