Habitat: in mesic prairie remnant...forming small patches, in low diversity areas with compacted soil that have been plowed historically. In deep, black loam. Associates include Carex lanuginosa, C. meadii, C. buxbaumii, Hierchloe odorata, Andropogon gerardi, Sisyrinchium montanum, Cypripedium candidum, Helianthus grosseserratus, Senecio pseudaureus, Solidago riddellii, S. gigantea.
