Habitat: in strips of alluvial and mesic hardwood forest on low terrace ... Canopy variously Fraxinus nigra, Populus tremuloides, Tilia americana, Ulmus americana, and Quercus macrocarpa. Understory variously Ostrya virginiana, Fraxinus nigra, F. pennsylvanica, and Abies balsamea. Silty soil. Additional associates: Cicuta maculata, Scutellaria lateriflora, Anemone canadensis, Solidago flexicaulis, Uvularia grandiflora, Caulophyllum thalictroides, Athyrium angustum, Phryma leptostachya, Circaea lutetiana, Asarum canadense, Hepatica americana, Brachyelytrum erectum, Carex pedunculata, C. intumescens.
