Habitat: lower slope of steep, 30-foot, north-northwest-facing slope ... Forming moderately dense carpets in narrow strip of mesic hardwood forest. Canopy of Betula papyrifera and Tilia americana, with tall understory of Ostrya virginiana. Sandy loam. Associated species include Carex pedunculata, C. deweyana, C. convoluta, Solidago flexicaulis, Thalictrum dioicum, Galium aparine, Arisaema triphyllum, Aquilegia canadensis, Maianthemum canadense, Athyrium angustum, Sanguinaria canadensis, Circaea lutetiana, Parthenocissus inserta.
