Taxon: Trichia varia (Pers. ex J.F. Gmel.) Pers.
Family: Physaraceae
Determiner: Mahoney,. D.P.
Collector: Bell, A.   s.n.
Date: 2006-08-23
Verbatim Date: 23-Aug-2006
Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the portage between Snowbank Lake and Disappointment Lake, approx. 25 miles NE of Ely MN
Substrate: On aspen wood.
Description: Sporangia were numerous over a large area of the decorticated aspen (evenly spaced but not shoulder to shoulder) and were yellow and somewhat immature when collected. Normal maturation occurred during the time that the collection was left in a well-ventilated collection box and buff to ochraceous-colored sporangia on short stubby black stalks resulted. In overhead view the sporangia were mostly 0.4-0.6 mm in diameter and appeared globose to subglobose (rarely, short slightly bent plas-modiocarps were seen); in side view sporangia were mostly 0.6-1.0 mm tall (excluding the stalks) and appeared obovoid to broadly clavate. Worth noting is a dark blackish to sometimes reddish contiguous hypothallus (unreported elsewhere to my knowledge). Stalks were black and stubby with longitudinal wrinkles and varied from nearly absent to 0.2 mm long. Capillitium of yellow to ochraceous free elaters of various lengths with pointed ends and ornamented with 2(-3) overlapping spiral bands which protruded more on one side of the elater than on the other. Spores were yellow in mass, globose, verruculose and 12-13 um in diameter.
