Habitat: mature boreal hardwood-conifer forest dominated by Betula papyrifera, Tilia americana, Abies balsamea & Picea glauca. Open canopy. Dense shrub layer. Rocky soil with frequent bedrock exposures. Associates include Carex intumescens, C. deweyana, C. arctata, C. pedunculata, Viola incognita, Corylus cornuta, Lonicer canadensis, Lycopodium dendroideum.
