Habitat: A brushy habitat at edge of a swale in an old field ... With C. punctata ... Associated with Viburnum lentago, Alnus incana ssp. rugosa, Symphoricarpos occidentalis, Crataegus macracantha, C. punctata.
Description: [duplicate specimen annotated: "24269 & 25482 only partly fit C. macracantha (in the eglandular petiole and dark purple-brown 1yr old twigs). The anthesis time appears to be close to near by C. chrysocarpa which is not right, it should be later. C. macracantha should flower a good week to 2 weeks after C. chrysocarpa but 24269/25482 is obviously flowering synchronously with 24174/25279 at about the same latitude. Its leaf shape is good C. chrysocarpa. So I have a bit of doubt about this specimen. This doubt generally disappears when one has seen plenty of specimens froma given area but this is not yet." J.B. Phipps 1/19/1995]
